Milk allergy and lactose intolerance: what is the difference?

Lactose intolerance is a problem related to the digestion of lactose, while milk allergy is an immune reaction to milk protein. The two are not interchangeable: in case of milk allergies, the lactose-free product is not necessarily appropriate.
